Hello everyone, I’m Sharik, and I’m thrilled to be delivering my first TEDx talk. Today, we're exploring the concept of "roots," a profound topic that resonates deeply with my professional and personal experiences over nearly three decades. Just like the speakers before me, I wish to convey insights from my journey, hopefully offering you, the young minds here, some valuable lessons to ponder as you navigate life beyond the classroom.
The Strength of Roots: An Analogy
Let's think of life as a tree. Much like a tree, the stability and ability to withstand life's challenges depend on the depth and breadth of our roots. The wider and deeper our roots, the more capable we become of weathering the storms. This analogy extends to communities, where interconnectedness forms the bedrock for nurturing and flourishing against adversities.
Building a Strong Foundation
Strengthening our roots and ensuring we have a solid foundation is crucial. My view rests on four cornerstones:
- Family:
- Families represent the fundamental source of our being. Our lives are continuations of generations before us, enriched by their experiences and sacrifices.
- It is essential to understand and appreciate this lineage. Spend quality time with your parents and ancestors to grasp the full depth of your existence.
- Education:
- Education complements family upbringing. It provides skills and knowledge, critical components of our foundation.
- Attitude:
- While family and education form the foundational backdrop, attitude is self-developed. A positive, forward-looking attitude shapes how successfully we can implement our learned skills and values.
- Work Ethic:
- This intrinsic trait ensures consistency and dedication to achieving our life's goals. No external force can bestow it upon you.
Mythical Journeys and Real-Life Adventures
Joseph Campbell’s concept of the "Hero's Journey" offers a captivating framework. This storytelling arc—from the call to adventure through trials and tribulations, and finally to triumph—mirrors our real-life experiences and growth. In movies, as in life, trials often yield significant personal growth and development.
Personal Narrative and Industry Insights
Transitioning to my journey from the start of my career to leading Zee's film business, the path was never straightforward. Like any compelling story, it had its highs and lows.
- Early Career:
- I began in finance—unsuitable for me, yet foundational in shaping my future endeavors.
- Transition into Media:
- My leap from banking into India's nascent Internet industry marked a pivot.
- Despite an early career setback, I navigated through telecom, radio, cricket league ventures, finally arriving at the film industry.
- Finding My Niche:
- Engaging in the film sector led to both entrepreneurial ventures and corporate roles.
- My path, laden with challenges (including job losses and personal tragedies), taught resilience through disruption.
Embracing Uncertainty and Flexibility
Life is less about following a predefined script and more about adapting your roles to fit the situation, much like musicians finding unexpected artistry in a mud pot.
