Unlocking the Secrets of the Herculaneum Scrolls: A Journey of Imaging Innovation

The Mission of Imaging Innovation

"I'm an imaging specialist and I've always felt it was my mission to use those technologies, imaging in general, to solve new problems." These words encapsulate the ambition driving Brent, a pioneer in the field of imaging, whose vision targets mysteries sealed within ancient scrolls. In particular, Brent fantasized about non-intrusively exploring the unreadable, closed manuscripts, unlocking secrets untouched for millennia.

One of the biggest challenges for this imaginative endeavor has been gaining access to the highly guarded Herculaneum scrolls, which lie secured in Naples. Brent's initial attempts to access them were thwarted by conservators wary of their fragile nature. However, his determination never wavered.

"Imaging isn't just capturing a moment; it's about revealing the unseen," says Brent, reflecting on the potential of his techniques.

In 2019, Brent’s efforts gained momentum as his imaging techniques started to show tangible promise. His advocacy for this cause was recognized by Francoise Berard, the conservateur de Bibliothèque at the Institut de France in Paris. The institute became a crucial ally, offering a gateway to one of the two remaining collections of Herculaneum scrolls outside Italy.

The Path to Preservation and Access

"Je suis conservateur de Bibliothèque. Je dirige la bibliothèque de l'Institut de France," announces Francoise Berard. With a history spanning over 200 years, the Institut de France houses its own collection of the precious papyri. Sharing Brent's enthusiasm for unlocking their secrets, Francoise Berard has granted him access amidst numerous risks involved.

Thus began the artful maneuvering of these fragile texts, orchestrated by a team dedicated to their preservation. Brent, alongside his team, crafted a sophisticated method to ensure these scrolls were transported securely. The technique revolved around photogrammetry, a process enabling the creation of detailed replicas. These models were meticulously used to design transport cases, allowing scrolls to be safely encased in their form-fitted molds.

The Science Behind the Replicas

Leading this endeavor, Seth Parker explains, "We took many photographs of the scroll and reconstructed the 3D shape from those photographs. This model was crafted from a CT scan done in 2009, providing an exact fit for the intricate structure of the scroll's exterior."

This foresight ensured the scroll could be mounted horizontally in its dedicated case, eliminating any precarious handling during its journey.

The Odyssey to the United Kingdom

In an intricate dance of responsibilities and care, the Institut de France staff placed the safeguarded scrolls into specially designed casings. From Paris, these delicate treasures embarked on a 360-mile journey to Oxfordshire, UK. Brent awaited them, ready to attempt the seemingly impossible at the Diamond Light Source.

The UK’s National Synchrotron, Diamond Light Source, became the latest stage for pioneering science. Brent encapsulates this anticipation, querying, "How does one read a book or a scroll without ever opening it?" This rhetoric resonates through the halls of Diamond Light Source, a space dedicated to unraveling the material mysteries of both past and future.

A Wonder of Modern Technology

Diamond Light Source boasts an impressive facility where electrons achieve speeds near that of light. This acceleration produces electromagnetic radiation—a luminance able to focus with precision hundreds of billions of times brighter than the sun. This brilliance forms the crux of Brent’s research.

"The synchrotron enables us to produce highly concentrated photon beams, essential for unveiling what remains inside," Brent describes, standing amidst a synergy of innovation.

Utilizing this facility’s intense X-ray capabilities, Brent and his team propose a vision devoid of physical interference. These high-resolution X-rays interact with the scroll's contents, theoretically allowing Brent to distinguish between ink and papyrus solely by the ink's denser material reflecting more rays.

Past Successes and Present Challenges

In 2015, Brent endeared the world by unveiling a 2000-year-old carbonized scroll from Ein Gedi in Israel, providing scholars with verified translations of Leviticus' first chapters. This work set a precedent but presented unique difficulties; the Ein Gedi scroll seemingly contained metals in its ink, unlike the carbon-centric Herculaneum papyri.

The next step in Brent's journey involves navigating these challenges, where ancient inks composed primarily of carbon offer minimal contrast against the carbon papyrus. This issue necessitated an innovative solution.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

Here, Brent leverages his proficiency in computer science with a riveting application of artificial intelligence. Gathering fragments from the Paris collection—tangible with visible ink—Brent utilized an AI program to detect ink presence, training it on visible samples to identify otherwise hidden markings.

"We've trained a system to recognize subtle changes, systematically identifying where ink meets papyrus," says Brent, underscoring the artificial intelligence's role as this journey presses onward.

These fragments provide crucial baselines, enabling the team to draw comparisons between visible and hidden script.

Herculaneum's Promise

As the AI model matures, the process of scanning the intact scrolls begins. The sofistication involved reverberates a sense of awe, as being in the presence of artifacts breathing history from 2000 years ago prompts a sacred reverence.

Finally set to uncover the secrets withheld for centuries, Brent stands poised at the confluence of innovation and history. His journey embodies the perseverance to unravel what was once concealed.
